Questions, answered
The questions people ask most about detailing, with short, straight answers.
Prices and booking
Detailing basics
Are you a car wash?
No. JSL is a detail shop that works by appointment, not a drive-through wash. A detail takes hours, not minutes, and each service shows its time before you book.
What's the difference between a car wash and a detail?
A wash cleans the outside in minutes. A detail is a hands-on reset that takes hours: the paint is decontaminated and protected, and the interior is cleaned surface by surface.
How often should I get my car detailed?
Two to four times a year suits most daily drivers. In central Massachusetts the two that matter most are late fall, to protect the paint before salt season, and spring, to get the salt off.
Is a detail worth it before I sell or trade in?
Usually, yes. Kelley Blue Book notes that a clean, well-kept car gets a better trade-in offer, and a detail is the quickest way to show a car that way.
Interior
Can you get pet hair out?
Yes. Leaving no dirt or hair behind is part of Jason's interior detail. A lot of pet hair takes longer, so mention it when you book or text a photo first.
Can you clean up spills, stains and bad messes?
Jason handles the messes people dread, from a vomit accident on cloth seats to a spill the owner couldn't even find, as his reviews describe. Some set-in stains can only be lightened, so text a photo and he'll tell you what to expect.
Exterior and winter care
How often should I wash my car in winter?
AAA recommends at least every two weeks in salt season, and after storms, including the underside. Wash on a day above freezing so water doesn't freeze in door seals and locks.
What does the clay step do?
It lifts the grit a wash leaves bonded to the paint, like rail dust, tar specks and overspray. The paint feels smooth again and the sealant bonds to clean paint.
Is spring pollen bad for paint?
Wiping dry pollen off grinds it into the paint and leaves fine scratches, so rinse it off instead. A protected finish lets pollen, sap and bird droppings rinse away more easily.
Polishing and swirls
What is a one-step paint enhancement?
One round of polishing after a full wash and decontamination. It brings back gloss and depth and softens light swirls. Deeper defects need multi-stage correction.
Will polishing remove every scratch?
No. A scratch that catches your fingernail has usually gone through the clear coat, and clear coat is thin, so a careful detailer stops before taking too much off. Polishing removes or softens the light marks that dull the finish.
Where do swirl marks come from?
Mostly from washing: brush car washes and dirty mitts or towels drag grit across the paint. They show up as circular scratches in direct sunlight.
Ceramic coating
How long does a ceramic coating last?
It depends on the product and how the car is washed. Professional coatings are typically rated from about three to seven years. Brush car washes and harsh soaps wear them down faster.
Is ceramic coating worth it?
Yes if you keep your car for a few years and want it easier to clean: salt, brine and bugs let go faster, and the gloss lasts. No if you're hoping it will stop rock chips or scratches.
Does ceramic coating stop rock chips?
No. Clear paint protection film is what stops chips. A coating protects against UV, chemicals and grime and keeps the car easier to wash. Many owners film the front and coat the rest.
Does the paint need polishing before a coating?
Yes. A coating locks in whatever is under it, swirls included, so the paint is corrected first. That prep is a big part of why coating prices vary.
How do I wash a coated car? Can I use an automatic car wash?
Hand wash every week or two with a pH-neutral car soap, and skip brush car washes. An occasional touchless wash is generally fine, though strong pre-soaks wear the coating faster.
Is a graphene coating better than ceramic?
Graphene coatings are still mostly silica, the same base as ceramic, with a small graphene additive. The believable benefit is somewhat less water spotting. Prep and aftercare matter far more than the label.
What does "9H hardness" mean?
It's a pencil-hardness score, roughly 3 to 4 on the mineral scale. It doesn't make paint scratch-proof, and higher numbers on the label are marketing.
Was my dealer's ceramic package a real coating?
Sometimes not. Consumer Reports lists dealer paint sealant and coating packages among add-ons buyers don't need, and many are quick spray sealants. If water stops beading within a few months, it most likely wasn't a long-lasting coating.
Headlights
Will cloudy headlights fail inspection in Massachusetts?
They can. State inspection rules require headlight lenses to be intact, clean, unobstructed and free from cracks, and the inspector makes the call. Restoring cloudy lenses helps; cracked lenses need replacing.
Should I restore my headlights or replace them?
AAA found yellowed lenses put out about 20% of a new lamp's low beam, and restoration brought that back to about 70%. Replace a lens if it's cracked or fogged on the inside.
How long does headlight restoration last?
It depends on the UV protection applied afterward. Polishing alone can yellow again within months, which is why Jason's service finishes by protecting the lens.
Trim
How long does trim restoration last?
Dressings wash off in days or weeks. Restorers that bond to the plastic last months, and trim coatings longer. Jason restores the trim and protects it against fading.
